| Mathias Martin STRUBE / STRAUB
Mary __?__ |
| Note: Our subject appears in the records only as STRUBE or STRAUB, not STRAUBE; yet, his children go by STRAUBE. If this weren't a German surname, I wouldn't be conflicted about it, but in German, the terminal "e" is pronounced. STRAUBE is pronounced in two syllables, "straw-bee," while STRAUB is pronounced in one syllable, "strawb." I have never seen one convert to the other because of the obvious difference in pronunciation. So, was a silent "e" merely added later? Or was he originally "stroo-bee"? |
