Henry H. Straub (1818-1897) learned the trade of blacksmithing in Penn. After the Civil War, he turned his attention to farming. Coming to Illinois in the spring of 1867, he first settled in Ogle County. In December of that year he moved to Cherry Grove Township. His wife, Elizabeth (Adlum) Straub, bore him nine children, but only four of them survived infancy: Peter Wilson; Edward Adlum; Ellen, wife of Alfred Whitacre; and John A.
