JACKSON JAIL IS RUSHED FOR WOMAN SLAYER

Ex-Convict, Confessing Murder of Miss Alice Mallett,
Saved Ffom (sic) Crowd Bent on Hanging

(By United Press)

JACKSON, Mich., June 14.— a mob attempting to storm the Jackson jail and get possession of George Straub, ex-convict, who confessed murdering Miss Alice Mallett, was dispersed early today by tear bombs hurled into the crowd by officers.  Miss Mallett, matron of the Crittendon home, was found slain and her body mutilated with an axe on Jun 9.

Straub, regarded as mentally sub-normal, was under suspicion from the first and a complete confession was made public early last night.

Many Women in Mob

The streets were filled with hundreds of persons who were talking mob violence.  Hundreds of women and children were in the crowd.  Many women took the lead in demanding the confessed slayer's life.

The crowd surged forward to the jail steps.  Sheriff George Larabee ordered the deputies to throw the gas bombs from the second floor window.  The crowd, angrily defiant, was forced to give way.

Straub Taken From Town

In the meantime, Straub, heavily cloaked, was taken out through a rear entrance and whisked away in an automobile to a neighboring town.

As the crowd broke forward a second time, the deputies announced Straub was no longer in the jail.  When the crowd refused to believe he had been taken away, a committee was appointed and searched the jail.

MISS ALICE MALLETT

Tear bombs used by deputy sheriffs in Jackson, Mich., early today dispersed a mob bent on taking George Straub, ex-convict and confessed slayer of Miss Mary (sic) Mallett, from pail (sic) and lynching him.

The "Crittendon Home" is the YMCA, where Alice was the cafeteria director.

Tear Gas Is Used To Protect a Man From Angry Mob

JACKSON, MICH., June 14.— Use of tear gas to repeal (sic) the advances of more than 1,000 angry citizens of Jackson who sought to take George Straub, confessed slayer of Miss Alice Mallett, from the custody of the sheriff, is largely responsible for Straub's safety in an unnamed Michigan city today.  The prisoner, disguised as a city fireman, marched through the ranks of the crowd that sought his life last night, and was spirited out of Jackson several hours before it was learned he had left the jail.

Early today the city was quiet with several units of national guardsmen, police reserves and state police officers assisting the local authorities in guarding against any recurrence of disorder.

STATE POLICE GUARD CONFESSED SLAYER OF MISS ALICE MALLETT

LANSING, MICH. Jun 15.—A squad of state police officers today continued to stand guard at the city jail where George Straub, alleged confessed slayer of Miss Alice Mallett, was held in safety last night as several score of Jackson men demanded the prisoner.  Local officers also were on duty in all streets to disperse crowds or prevent demonstrations.

The band of Jackson men left that city by automobile late last night for Mason, where they believed Straub had been taken, but were informed en route that the prisoner was still at Lansing.  They came to this city knowing the man was strongly guarded and no attempt was made to rush the jail, members of the band contenting themselves with a look at Straub, who was routed from a peaceful sleep and brought into a corridor.

Harold Mallett, brother of Straub's alleged victim, led the visitors.

The officials take little stock in a second confession Straub is said to have made, in which he named Clarence Meadowlark, a negro circus employe (sic), as an accomplice.  Meadowlark, also in custody, is said to have proved an alibi.
