Lineages, Results, and Analysis of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b ROSEs of Group L1

The ROSEs below have been assigned together by the Rose Family Association DNA Project as being members of "Group L1." Except for three ROSEs descended from Alexander ROSE of Invergordon, Scotland, I do not find these individuals related. Nor do I find any reason to ally them with the Group L ROSEs, beyond the fact that these are all Haplogroup R1b ROSEs. In my opinion, the Invergordon ROSEs should be given their own group letter, independent of Group L, and the other four should be put back in the "Unassigned" category, as none has a match with anyone else.

GD = Genetic Distance, the number of mutation events separating two haplotypes. In this case, it's the GD from the test subject to the modal haplotype of the Invergordon ROSEs.

The three Invergordon ROSEs (Subgroup L1a) are clearly related, as we would expect from having a near common ancestor (see lineages to the far right). I do not see them as closely related to any of the other four Group L1 ROSEs, nor do I see the four as closely related to each other, with the (remotely) possible exception of L1a and L1b. Please see "What Constitutes a Match" at the bottom of this page for an appreciation of the various levels of matching.

The alleged connection of the Group L ROSEs to the Invergordan and Perthshire ROSEs is also not supported. I discuss these relationships in more detail on the this page. The suggestion that the Group L and L1 ROSEs "share a common ancestor" can be said about everyone in Haplogroup R1b or, for that matter, everyone on the planet. I don't see any particular reason to assert that L and L1 are any more closely related than any other R1b groups, especially when testing only 25 markers — a lot can happen in that third panel (Markers 26-37) because it is the most variable of the all panels.

I would strongly urge everyone on this page who has not upgraded to at least 37 markers to do so and to please share those results.

With regard to #78910, desc/o Donald ROSE (b. 1840, Perthshire; m. Ann WOOD)… Can anyone confirm that his son, James W., is the James ROSE (æ 34, b. SCT; im. 1906) with wife Lucy (æ 30, b. ENG; im. 1908) and son, Donald J. (æ 1y6m, b. NJ) in the 1910 census of Nutley, Essex Co., NJ?
