R1b is the most common haplogroup in western Europe, reaching a frequency of 70-80% in the British Isles (please see distribution maps), so it is not surprising that it is the most frequent haplogroup in the CORBIN project.  R1b is the haplogroup believed by some to have populated Europe from an Iberian refugium when the last glacial ice sheet retreated about 10-13,000 years ago, however the history of R1b is hotly debated, and research on it is active and ongoing.
Of the many haplotypes represented within R1b, the most common 12-marker haplotype is called the "Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype."  FTDNA members whose 12-marker haplotype matches one of the four most common 12-marker R1b haplotypes will find they have a "WAMH" logo on their member page, along with probably thousands of matches at this level.  The nearer one's haplotype is to the R1b modal, the more markers one needs to test.  I have standardized on 67 markers for all my projects because this level of testing usually removes any amibuity regarding a match — except in R1b where it is not uncommon to need 111 markers to confidently determine that a match is not merely coincidental.
There are 28 project members in 11 genetically distinct families who are some form of Hg R1b
(plus 3 genetic matches in FIELD/FIELDS and one in MERCER who are not project members).

This family descends from George CORBIN of Northampton and Accomack Cos., VA.  Descendants occur there and in adjacent Somerset and Worcester Cos., MD.  These four counties form the southern end of the Delmarva Peninsula, so I have dubbed them the "Delmarva" CORBINs.  They are both geographically and genetically distinct from the CORBINs of mainland Maryland (the "Baltimore Group").
These individuals have a 61/67 match, which is not quite as close as one might expect, though three of the mutations are at fast-mutating markers (labeled in red).  It is very likely that additional tested descendants will fall "in-between" these two individuals, meaning none will end up more than two or three mutations from the family's modal haplotype, which is the presumed haplotype of the common ancestor.  Their haplotypes are unique, especially for R-1b1a-2, with no matches in the FTDNA database, except with each other.
#111533 has received a gratis backbone SNP test from FTDNA with the result that he is M269+.

This individual is a paper descendant of John CORBIN, progenitor of the Northern Neck CORBINs; however, he is not a genetic match with them — they are Haplogroup I1 — meaning our subject has an NPE in his patrilineal line.  Nor do we have a clue as to what his biological surname might be because he has no matches with anyone at any level, not even at 12 markers, which is a reflection of his distance from the modal haplotype.  All this individual can do, at this point, is wait and hope for a match, eventually.
Probably because his haplotype is so unusual, FTDNA gave our subject a gratis backbone SNP test, with the result that he is M269+.
Until more cousins are tested, all we know for certain is that the NPE is below John III.
Something's wrong with the paper genealogy - working on it.

This individual has transferred in from the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project.  He has just begun working on his paper genealogy, so we may not have a lineage for him for awhile.
His haplotype is rare, especially for an R1b-M269.  He has just seven 12/12 matches in the FTDNA database (as of 25 Jun 2014), five of them in surname NORMAN.  Two of these NORMANs have tested to 37 markers and one to 67 markers, so your project admin recommends upgrading to find out whether this match is maintained or falls away. Because of the rarity of this haplotype, the possiblity of an NPE with NORMAN is rearing its head, so upgrading to more markers here is critical.

This individual has many 12/12 matches, a few near matches at 25 markers, and a few distant matches at 37 or 67 markers, all in other surnames.  He has no significant matches, and none at any level with surname CORBIN or variation.  Some 40% of males have no match "out of the gate," so it's not that unusual not to have one.  Still, we would like to see other patrilineal line male descendants of Mathuel CORBIN tested to be certain our subject does not have an NPE.

#82160 and #174921 descend from Mrs. Penelope "Penny" (__?__) CORBIN of Prince William Parish, Beaufort Dist. [now Hampton Co.], SC, who appears there in the 1850 census as a widow with two sons, Edward and Charles.  Despite years of research, neither her husband's given name nor her maiden name has yet been discovered.  #111536 is either the son or nephew of Moses CORBIN, the earliest CORBIN known to have settled in Florida.  Moses was born in SC, but his ancestors are unknown.  It is a pleasant surprise to have these two elusive CORBIN families find a match.  Now, if only we can find them a match who is not so elusive!
The value of 16 at DYS464b (green table cells) for the two descendants of Edward suggests we have a branching marker uniting them, one that distinguishes them from the descendants of Moses.  For an explanation of how I color code these table cells, please see my discussion of Signature Markers.
These individuals have rare haplotypes.  Aside from their matches with each other, they have just a handfull of matches at 12 or 25 markers in the FTDNA database (all in other surnames).  At 37 or more markers, they match no one else, but each other.  DNA testing should eventually connect these individuals to their larger CORBIN family, but it will be a waiting game until the right CORBIN is tested.  Having a rare haplotype is ultimately an advantage because the match, when it comes, should be unequivocal.
#82160 has undergone deep SNP testing at FTDNA with these results:
M207+ M173+ M343+ P25+ M73- M269+ U106+ U198- P107- L1- L48- M65- M153- U152- M126- M160- M37- M222- P66- SRY2627- M18-

These were probably the most anticipated results of any test yet taken in the CORBIN project because so many lines of CORBINs over so many years have attempted to connect to Henry CORBIN of the Hall End CORBINs of Warwickshire, England, and Lancaster [now Middlesex] Co., VA.  The reason for the attempt to connect to him is that Henry CORBIN is a "gateway" ancestor, as is his wife, Alice (ELTONHEAD) CORBIN (see list at the BOMC web site), both of whom have a host of illustrious ancestors.  As it happens, at least the disappointment is evenly spread among the hopefuls because this descendant of Henry CORBIN matches none of the other CORBINs so far tested.
Our subject has several dozen full matches at 12 markers (in other surnames), but only a dozen or so partial matches at 25 markers (again, in other surnames), and no matches of any kind at 37 or more markers.
The need remains to test additional descendants to prove this one does not have an NPE in his patrilineal line, but his paper connection is good, so we probably have our answer.
Our subject has undergone deep SNP testing at FTDNA with these results:
L48+ L47- L44- L164- L148- L188-

All the CORBINs in this table are matching closely enough to indicate they have a common ancestor in genealogical time.  In fact, all but two have a paper connection to Nicholas3, whom many assert (probably correctly) is Nicholas Z. CORBIN, grandson of Nicholas1 CORBIN (<1645-1696), the 1671 immigrant to Maryland, though solid documentation is still needed.  Obviously, we very much need an individual with a solid paper connection to Nicholas1 to be tested for the project.  The project is offering a free test to such an individual (if you are such a person or know of one, please contact the project admin for details).

#130376 has undergone basic SNP testing at FTDNA, with these results:
P312+ M65- M153- U152- L21- M37- M222- P66- SRY2627-
Update:  #130376 has taken the BigY test with the result that his terminal SNP is Z295.
Update (11 Aug 2016):  the BigY BAM file for #130376 has been analyzed by YFull.  His YFull ID is YF04985.  By their reckoning, his SNP Path is as above.  The Z295 SNP appeared ca. 3900 yrs BP.  He has 48 novel SNPs and no SNP matches.  The YFull analysis includes some 400 Y-DNA STR markers not displayed by FTDNA.  Our subject has 45 private mutations and no close matches among these markers.  He has 694 distant matches with GDs ranging from 61/358 to 98/393.  In other words, and so far at least, these CORBINs have no close genetic matches, except with each other.

Nicholas3 is alleged to be Nicholas Z.3, son of Edward2, but the connection is unproven (i.e., there is no documentation identifying the children of Nicholas Z., so people have assumed he must be the Nicholas who is father of Benjamin and William).  So far, nothing refutes the allegation, so it may yet turn out to be correct, but documentation is definitely needed.  Edward had three other sons, in addition to Nicholas Z., so the project seeks a patrilineal descendant of each one for testing.
With the testing of a descendant of Henry3, 1884 immigrant from the Isle of Guernsey to New York City, the Baltimore CORBINs have "crossed the pond" and become the Guernsey-Baltimore CORBINs.  The reason William2 appears to span two generations is that he had two wives and 14 children, the youngest of whom was Henry3.
The mutation from 19 to 18 at DYS458 is deduced to have happened in Nicodemus5 because all of William6's sons are known, and James M.7 isn't one of them, so he is presumably a nephew.  If more than one of Nicodemus5's sons has the mutation, then logically, the mutation must have happened in Nicodemus because none of his brothers have it.  We do not know the identities of all the sons and grandsons of Nicodemus5, but the genetics point to James M.6 being one of his grandsons.  So far, this is the only "branching" mutation we have found, that is, a mutation that appears to define a branch of the family.
James M.7 CORBIN (c1837/8-c1869) is of MD and/or OH, then MS, then Landry Par., LA.  His father has yet to be identified, but the children of several of William6's brothers are unknown, so there are several possibilities here.  My placing James M. in the 7th generation is an estimate based on his birthyear. The tested descendant has a mutation from 13 to 12 at DYS439, which had to have occurred somewhere downstream of Nicodemus5.
Somewhere between Nicodemus5 and his tested descendant there was a mutation from 12 to 11 at DYD565 (magenta table cell), but we don't yet know in which generation.  Its location can be determined by testing other descendants of Benjamin, through different lines.
The tested descendant of William Enyeart6 has a mutation from 19 to 20 at DYS458, which had to have occurred somewhere downstream of David G.5.

These two individuals descend from John FONES, a.k.a., John Fones CORBIN, adopted son of Rawley CORBIN II of the Northern Neck CORBINs of Virginia.  Their close STR match supports having a near common ancestor.  In addition, both have taken the FamilyFinder test, and it shows them matching at the level of 2nd-4th cousin.
The value of 15 at DYS392 (magenta table cells) is unusual.  According to SMGF, only 1.146% of people tested are 15 at this marker, and their only 12/12 matches at FTDNA are with each other and a HUNT, plus some 11/12 matches with others.  A value of 26 at DYS447 (yellow table cells) is uncommon (15.129% of tested individuals), so between these two markers, they have no 25/25 or 24/25 matches at FTDNA, except with each other, though they have some 23/25 matches.  At 37 or more makers, their closest match is a handful of 33/37's, and at 67 and 111 markers, they have no matches, whatsoever (at any level), with anyone but each other.
There has been a FONES line from Virginia Y-DNA tested at FTDNA (#250519), but he is not a Y-DNA STR match with our two FONES-CORBINs.
#320617, but not #205253, has a FamilyFinder match with a male surnamed CORBIN, but this individual is sharing neiterh his ancestry nor his contact information.  Neither man has a FF match with a FONES (as of 24 Nov 2015).

FIELDS-CORBIN NPE
CORBIN #118467 is a paper descendant of Peter CORBIN, founder of the Pickens Group of SC (see below), but he is a genetic match with a FIELD/FIELDS family, so he apparently has an NPE in his patrilineal line.  Testing of cousins shows the NPE must be somewhere in or downstream of Erby Gaylord DAVIS.

Our CORBIN has a 67/67 match with FIELDS #F-27 from the Fields Project at WFN, which surely gives them a near common ancestor.  Their closest other match (62/67) is to another FIELDS, which is still close enough for them to have had a common ancestor in genealogical time.  FEILD (sic) #F-73 needs to upgrade to more markers to confirm his relationship to the other three.
One of the FIELDS (#169910) has been deep SNP tested with the result that he is R-L159.
While most males are cccg at DYS464, individuals in this haplogroup subclade are typically ccgg.  The CORBIN has taken the DYS464X test proving he is, indeed, ccgg.  The two FIELDS may want to take the DYS464X test to confirm that they, too, are ccgg.
On the face of it, it would appear that in Panel 1 (Markers 1-12) the R-L159.2 modal has a GD (genetic distance) of two from the RP312 modal.  However, any change in 389i is automatically reflected in 389ii, so these differences really represent just one mutation event; therefore, for the purpose of calculating genetic distance (GD), they are counted as one event.

"[R-SRY2627] is a small [R1b] subclade that appears to have originated in Iberia within the last few thousand years.  It probably entered the British Isles before historical times.  Yes, it looks like the WAMH, but remember that the WAMH is a statistical construct.  It probably contains several different SNP-based subclades.  [R-SRY2627] is one of them." — in an email from Dr. David Wilson, R1b guru.

The DAMERON, CORBINs, and MERCERs in this table clearly have a near common ancestor.  The DAMERON is adopted, with an alleged CORBIN father, and the test results support that assertion.  The MERCER appears to have an NPE in his line because he, too, is clearly one of these CORBINs (the second MERCER is his first cousin).  His value of 18 at DYS576 may even be telling us to which branch of the family he belongs. Another CORBIN descends on paper from their progenitor, but is not a genetic match, so it appears he has an NPE in his patrilinel line (see FIELDS-CORBIN NPE above).
I'm assuming the MERCERs are the ones with the NPE because they are not remotely a match with a large group of MESSER/MERCER in the Mercer Y-DNA surname project with whom they should have had a match.  Only #243498 has officially joined the project (#59899 is not a member).
As for the CARLILL, at 37 markers, it was thought he might be one of these CORBINs, though the match was weak at 34/37.  He upgraded to 67 markers, and at 62/67, the match was still ambiguous, so he upgraded to 111 markers.  This case turns out to be a lesson in the importance of R1b's testing 111 markers because, at that level, his tentative match to these CORBINs fell apart.  This was his best match, with anyone, and he has no matches with CARLILL/CARLISLE, at all; so I'm afraid, for the present, he joins the ranks of those without a match.  I'm leaving him in the table because he makes such a good example of why, in Hg R1b, even 67 markers may not be enough to provide a solid answer, especially if the family modal haplotype is close to the modal haplotype for the haplogroup subclade.
Five of these individuals have a full 12/12 match with one of the Western Atlantic Model Haplotypes, so there's a "WAHM" logo on their member pages at FTDNA.  This particular 12-marker haplotype is the most common 12-marker haplotype in western Europe, so they have thousands of 12/12 matches in the FTDNA database (in other surnames).  Their resemblance to the modal haplotype continues to be close at 25 markers, so they have hundreds of near matches (in other surnames), though their only full matches (25/25) are with each other.  Their matches drop off precipitously at 37 markers.
#86553 and #N65974 are brothers, so it is no surprise that they match 67/67.  Please note that brother-brother testings, along with father-son testings, are not a wasted duplication.  In addition to proving there is no NPE separating them, these pairings give us the most accurate statistic we have on mutation rates because we know just one spermatogenic event separates them.
#77059 has undergone deep SNP testing at FTDNA, with this result:
M207+ M173+ M343+ P25+ M73- M269+ SRY2627+ M65- M153- M126- M160- M37- M222- P66- M18-
DYS712 may be the most volatile of all markers, so differences there are not terribly significant.

What constitutes a match?
Matches in other surnames are usually mere coincidence, so please ignore them — I'll let you know when you shouldn't!
For 12 markers: 9 or less is a non-relative; for 10-12 markers, please see this table compiled by FTDNA.
For 25 markers: 21 or less is a non-relative; for 22-25 markers,
For 37 markers: 31 or less is a non-relative; for 32-37 markers,
For 67 markers: 59 or less is a non-relative; for 60-67 markers,
For 111 markers: 100 or less is a non-relative; for 101-111 markers,
For any test:  0 matching markers, please contact NASA.
