Node Chart for the Descendants of Peter CARRICO I, 1674 Immigrant to Maryland

This "node chart" is actually a cladogram, similar to the one familiar to you showing the branching relationships between haplogroup subclades. Each fork or "node" in a cladogram represents the appearance of a new mutation. In the case of the haplotree, it's a new SNP mutation; in the case of the node chart (below), it's a new STR mutation. In the node chart, the branching cladogram is represented by a table, similar to the table I used to represent the Haplogroup J cladogram.

I realize that, at first, these charts may seem complicated, but once you grasp the concept of creating a descendant tree by plotting the appearance of new mutations, it really becomes quite simple. We just need a lot more participants to make it work and, as always, better paper documentation. DNA testing needs to used as a tool to support a pedigree when it's correct and falsify it when it's wrong, but it cannot be used instead of a paper pedigree, not at the levels we are currently testing. (With advances in technology, we may reach that point at an affordable price.)

If you find any part of this page difficult to understand or in need of improvement, please don't hesitate to contact me. The chart as given is tentative, used to demonstrate how STR data can be used to authenticate pedigrees. We are at the beginning of a long quest, one that will take many more participants (and thus years) to come to full fruition. However, it's useful to construct even a preliminary chart because it tells us which data we need most, that is, which descendants we should be giving priority to finding and funding.

UPDATE (9 Sep 2009): It appears that the mutation from 37 to 36 at CDYb has happened, independently, at least twice in this family, once downstream of Charles CARRICO and once in or downstream of Thomas Ignatius CARRICO I, if not more. CDYa and CDYb are among the most volatile of all markers, so this finding is not extraordinary. An alternative explanation is that the descendant of Josiah has had a back-mutation and Charles really did have the mutation. The testing of cousins can help determine which.

Peter I had three known sons: Peter II, Abel I, and James I. As of this writing, no one has proven a paper descent from James I, though there seems little doubt that he had at least some children, which would account for some of the "loose ends" among the CARRICOs in Kentucky.

Four individuals, so far, are modal at all 67 markers, which proves they have a common ancestor with the rest, but gives no clue as to how they are related to each other or to other family members. These individuals will need to max out their markers to refine their relationships; however, the rest of the family will need to do so, as well, for them to have anything to serve as a basis for comparison. The markers most likely to reveal differences are DYS710 and the Palindromic Pack. The project will pay the Transfer Fee for anyone testing DYS710.

Pale yellow table cells indicate no mutation has occurred. Pale grey table cells indicate a mutation must have taken place, but it's unknown in which generation it occurred (the testing of more cousins can reveal the locations of these mutations). Dark grey table cells indicate a line with an NPE in the lineage. White table cells indicate lines not yet tested.
